Motorcycles Only Swap Meet

The Club held its inaugural Motorcycles Only Swap Meet at Birdwood in September 2002. Home of the spectacular National Motor Museum (cars and bikes), Birdwood is located in the hills a short drive from Adelaide.

The Swap was held on the Birdwood Oval, and judging from the response of all who attended - buyer and sellers - was a raging success. With plenty of local support, together with visitors from interstate, there was fast and furious trading throughout the morning. Even if you couldn't find that elusive part, the on-site catering offered some attractive consumables!

As well as the usual trading activities, the Club mounted a static display of member's machines, including this delightful 1935 250cc Ariel. Believe it or not the machine was built up from parts, but with attention to detail rarely found even in a restored original machine. The owner even made jigs to reconstruct the lovely exhaust fishtails. In the background is a newly restored Hedstrom Indian - winner of the "People's Choice" Trophy.

There were quite a number of complete machines for sale, ranging from "ripe for restoration" early machines like this Omega, to more modern bikes like the trials iron in the background. I particularly liked the 300-miles-from-new 1960's MZ.

A bit more in the main stream was this M20 BSA, looking a bit ratty but perhaps destined for better things. The boxes on the table were filled with all manner of treasures - I found an early Bowden air lever that will go nicely on a veteran machine.

Altogether a thoroughly enjoyable day.

We've now held four highly-successful events, with each arguably improving on the previous. It seems like we have the right formula! Great location, great weather (so far!) and great rusty bits. With a setting like the Birdwood Oval on a September Sunday morning, it is hard to go too far wrong. See you on Sunday 17th September for the 2006 event.
